Downtown New York Deli was created with one goal in mind: to give the Kankakee community a place to gather, connect, and enjoy high-quality food in an inviting atmosphere.
Owner - Stephen Girard - a Chebanse native, grew up in the Kankakee area and has always appreciated everything the community has to offer - from the historic downtown to the Kankakee River and local trails. After purchasing the New York Deli location in Bourbonnais, he recognized the exciting momentum happening in Downtown Kankakee and wanted to be part of its continued growth.
The result is a unique space that blends gritty New York energy with a welcoming small-town feel.

In a world increasingly driven by technology and self-service kiosks, the deli intentionally prioritizes genuine customer and employee interactions. Every visit is designed to feel personal, whether you're stopping in for lunch, meeting friends, or grabbing a quick bite before exploring downtown.
One of their standout offerings is their fresh gelato, made using an innovative pod system with farm-fresh ingredients to ensure every scoop is as fresh and flavorful as possible.
The space itself was designed with the community in mind. Thanks to the partnership with Matthew and Steven Harder of HB Equities, a former office space was transformed into a welcoming dining area, while an underutilized lot on Merchant Street became a beautiful outdoor patio. Today, the restaurant can accommodate nearly 100 guests between its indoor seating and patio, creating another destination for people to gather before or after Downtown Kankakee events.
The deli has already hired 20 employees and serves hundreds of customers each day—contributing to the continued growth and vibrancy of Downtown Kankakee.
Looking ahead, Downtown New York Deli plans to expand its offerings with breakfast, beginning as a trial during the Farmers Market, while continuing to complement downtown events rather than compete with neighboring businesses.
Perhaps what has surprised the owner most has been the overwhelming support from the community.
