Q1: Tell us about yourself and your business. What do you make, offer, or do?
My name is Toni R. Wilson. I’m a retired nurse. I have over twenty plus years in the nursing profession. March of 2021 was the year Essentiality Collections was established. I became the owner and CEO of the first black owned medical apparel company in Kankakee County.
Q2: How did your business get started? Was there an a-ha moment or turning point that set everything in motion?
I became disabled and was unable to continue in my nursing profession.
Years later, I decided to create a business life that I could control, and fit into my disabled world.
My business fell right in line during the pandemic. I would cater to the essential workers, that needed durable medical uniforms with comfort and functionality; style was a bonus.
Q3: What has been one of your biggest challenges as a business owner, and how did you work through it?
I would say, the major challenge is keeping the storefront and website appealing to the consumers through marketing, campaigns and advertising. Especially, doing it alone.
Q4: What resources, people, or experiences have helped you most in building your business?
I ran across one of the most elite mentors known in the industry. I became a mentee of the millionaire mentor, Tina M. Payne. She was my lifeline. The knowledge I acquired was the forefront of landing my first contract with Olivet Nazarene University. I am currently the sole uniform supplier for their medical department and nursing students.
