Q1: Tell us about yourself and your business. What do you make, offer, or do?
My name is Karen Bond, and I am the founder of Luxe & Loaded Firearms Academy, a women veteran-owned firearm training company based in downtown Kankakee. As a U.S. Army veteran and retired law enforcement officer, I spent most of my career in male-dominated fields. I created Luxe & Loaded to provide a safe, welcoming space where women can ask questions, learn firearm safety, and build confidence without judgment. While women are the heart of my mission, I proudly train both women and men.
I offer Illinois Concealed Carry License certification and renewals, private firearms training, beginner safety classes, and situational awareness training. I also provide specialized safety programs for women, teens, churches, and the community.
Q3: What has been one of your biggest challenges as a business owner, and how did you work through it?
One of the biggest challenges has been securing funding to bring my safety initiatives and community programs to life. I have many ideas focused on education, prevention, and empowering others, and implementing those programs requires resources.
To work through this, I have remained committed to building strong community relationships and I am currently preparing to apply for grants to help expand my safety training programs.
My focus is to continue growing Luxe & Loaded Firearms Academy in a way that allows me to reach more people and make a lasting impact in the community.
Q5: What does being a Black entrepreneur in Downtown Kankakee mean to you?
How has the community shaped or supported your journey?
Being a Black entrepreneur in Downtown Kankakee means being part of a strong, supportive community that values growth, safety, and opportunity.
One of my priorities was finding a secure and welcoming location where everyone in our community could feel comfortable attending Luxe & Loaded Firearms Academy.
The Downtown Kankakee community has been incredibly supportive and welcoming. I have built meaningful partnerships with other local business owners, and that support has helped me grow and expand my mission.
I am grateful to be part of a community that believes in my vision and is committed to creating safe, empowering spaces for others.
Q6: What advice would you give to the next generation of Black makers, creators, or business owners who feel unsure about taking that first step?
My advice would be to trust that your gifts and talents are needed.
You have something valuable to offer, and your voice, creativity, and vision matter more than you realize.
The next generation needs leaders who are willing to step forward, be resilient, and create opportunities for others.
Believe in yourself, stay committed to your purpose, and understand that what you build can inspire and strengthen your entire community.
