Q1: Tell us about yourself and your business. What do you make, offer, or do?
The Venu’ Lounge and the V2 Event Space provide exceptional venues for a variety of occasions. The Venu’ Lounge offers a sophisticated environment where guests can relax in comfort and enjoy live performances featuring Jazz, Old School R&B, and Blues classics. Upon arrival, guests are welcomed by a warm and inviting atmosphere, elegant décor, attentive staff, and a selection of expertly crafted cocktails. We are proud to showcase local talent, such as this week’s featured artist “HVONDA,” and offer specialties like the “Organic Phoenix Lemon Drop Martini,” made with freshly picked Phoenix lemons.
Additionally, our V2 Event Space is ideal for hosting intimate gatherings, from corporate lunches and baby showers to birthday celebrations and sip-and-paint events.
We take pride in providing beautifully designed spaces that consistently exceed the expectations of those who choose to celebrate their special moments with us.
Q3: What has been one of your biggest challenges as a business owner, and how did you work through it?
Our biggest challenge was getting access to capital. Every bank we approached turned us down because our business—lounge and entertainment—was unfamiliar territory for them. With no previous experience running a lounge or bar, most banks viewed us as high-risk start-ups. Despite this, we persevered by investing in our own dreams, using retirement funds and savings. Although it was daunting, we made it through. This July marks two years in business, and we'll soon return to those same banks—now with experience and no longer considered just a start-up!
Q4: What resources, people, or experiences have helped you most in building your business?
Our Venu’ Family (customers) have been essential to our success, providing valuable support and feedback that have shaped our business. The City of Kankakee has offered crucial resources and visibility, and Steve Harder from HB Equities has played a significant role as a mentor, supporting our vision and fostering ongoing growth.
Q6: What advice would you give to the next generation of Black makers, creators, or business owners who feel unsure about taking that first step?
Never abandon your dreams. Commit yourself to excellence in whatever path you pursue—conduct thorough research, perform a market analysis, and understand the community’s needs. Even if you believe strongly in your idea, be sure to identify both the necessities and desires of the community you aim to serve before proceeding. Most importantly, act even when you’re afraid!
