From bold geometric patterns inspired by the iconic legacy of Frank Lloyd Wright to the bright blossoms of Kankakee's native flowers, each mural tells a story about the people, the history, and the creativity that define this community. Local artists and community partners have come together to create pieces that celebrate Kankakee's past while reflecting the spirit of today. And don't stop at the official district - amazing murals by talented local artists can be found all throughout our communities, so keep your eyes open and enjoy every colorful surprise!
The Railroad Museum
For a one-of-a-kind outing that kids will talk about long after the visit, head to the Kankakee Railroad Museum at 197 S. E. Avenue. Located in the north end of the Historic Illinois Central Depot in downtown Kankakee and founded in 1999 by the Kankakee Model Railroad Club, this hidden gem is as educational as it is fascinating. Kids can marvel at intricate O, HO, and N scale model train layouts, then step back in time exploring real historic equipment - including a 1947 Pullman coach modified to showcase what a typical dining car looked like in its era, a 1967 Union Pacific caboose, and a 1932 trolley that once ran a route from Merchant Street in Kankakee all the way to Olivet University in Bourbonnais. It's the kind of cool, unexpected experience that makes for a truly memorable family day out. Best of all, admission is free, with optional guided tours for just $2 per person. Open Friday through Sunday, 11 AM–4 PM. Learn more at 64642c0e1b959.site123.me.
